Dr. Mumpower served for two terms as a councilman and vice-mayor in Asheville, North Carolina.  In his hometown, which is arguably the most liberal city on the east coast, he was a persisting voice of reason and governmental restraint.  In 2008 he was the Republican candidate for the NC-11 Congressional seat against Heath Shuler and attracted support from both sides of the political spectrum due to his emphasis on fairness and consistent principled service.  He refused all PAC, party, and special interest money, used an all volunteer staff, and challenged his party to stand for its core principles or stand aside.  In an Obama year where all Republican congressional challengers in NC lost, he received 36% of the vote in his 15 county district while the highest vote getter, with a 3 county district, received 37%.  Dr. Mumpower is married and has two grown children and two grandchildren. He upholds a private psychology practice in Asheville and serves on various boards and commissions devoted to drug interventions, improving public housing, honoring veterans, and meeting the needs of children. Known for his candor and courage in refusing to step away from hard issues, Dr. Mumpower has most recently undertaken the challenges of serving as "The Candid Conservative" - a persisting voice for honest conservative thinking - a thorn in the side of unprincipled Republicans and Democrats alike...

My 10 Guiding Public Service Principles

  1. Work harder than the other side.
  2. Reach for the deeper truths on all issues.
  3. Resist the temptation of transferring todays bills to our children.
  4. Support the "American Success Equation" - Liberty, Opportunity, & Responsibility.
  5. Never compromise on principles or essential issues.
  6. Resist the corruptive influences of politics and a slide toward big government and little people.
  7. Always listen and communicate - never pander.
  8. Focus on our interests versus special or selfish interests.
  9. Concentrate on providing strong service to those you represent - solve problems.
  10. Be careful with other people's money, liberty, life, and values...
