It may surprise you to learn that a guy who calls himself "The Candid Conservative" is an unapologetic liberal. For the inspiration behind that bit of confusion, we need look no further than the Latin word 'liberalis' - "of freedom; worthy of a free man, gentlemanlike, courteous, generous". By that definition, any conservative of conscience might qualify - and proudly so.
From such a definition it would seem that authentic liberals, like authentic conservatives, are a rarity in twenty-first America. In reality the wholesomeness of the liberal ideals that have propelled man forward for centuries has been distorted into an unrecognizable twenty-first paradox of harm. The progressive liberal truth has been bartered for what is factually a regressive liberal lie.
The mutation of deeper truth to shallow deception is almost always predatory - somebody benefits from the swap while someone pays. The modern make believe liberal, like the make believe conservative, is typically a master at deceiving us with words. Here are a few of the more common concoctions.
Comfort for the Truth
You can warm a cat for a time by setting the house on fire but at some point the purrs will cease. Regressive liberals sell the idea that something can be had for nothing (comfort) and that reality (truth) is relative. For the limitations of this fantasy thinking, find a tall building and test the very specific truth of gravity as you try to fly without wings. Comfort is best found as a byproduct of productivity, love, and responsibility. Short-cuts don't exist, but liberal politicians have found you can herd cattle to the slaughter by pretending so.
Hope for Accountability
Anticipation of good is necessary to sustain the human spirit. Absent the lift of accountability, hope is like a balloon that quickly sinks to the ground. It is extremely unloving to sell people on the idea that we deserve happiness and prosperity without the responsibility of planting our gifts in the garden.
Diversity for Maturity
Liberals love the word 'diversity', but have you noticed what happens when they encounter something outside their comfort zone? Watch regressive liberals in those special moments and the red faces, eye bulges, and nasty tones will reveal their sincere views on diversity - "It's great as long as it matches my sense of good and bad." The shallow manipulations of diversity training are a poor substitute for good old fashioned maturity. Mature people delight in the differences that God builds into mankind, but retain lucid perspective on values, experience, and reality.
Selling the Exception
Modern day liberals love to advocate the exception and fight the rule. Unfortunately, resistance for its own sake is the most primitive approach to identity - think terrible twos - and not remotely up to the challenges of a dangerous world. Sure there are ways that capitalism and the American way of life have failed, but the successes in uplifting more people than any other system on earth are undeniable. Liberal advocacy for gay rights, abortion rights, minority rights, etc. often has less to do with compassion for others than the need to prop up one's identity through resistance.
Control for liberty
Even though liberalism has an historical tie to liberty, today's liberals, as measured by their actions, hate freedom. If you see a new law, rule, restriction, or constraint coming from government, behind it usually rests the hand of a regressive liberal. These folks love to create limits because it provides an illusion of control - the relief is momentary and thus the never ending quest for more rules. The opposite of 'limit' is 'liberty' - a word that liberals are confusing with personal indulgence. The swap of liberty and responsibility for control and indulgence is a recipe for cultural suicide.
Enabling for Loving
Probably the greatest lie in the twenty-first century version of liberalism is the pretense that loving and enabling is the same thing. Enablers try to sell the idea that personal accountability is a minimal part of the happiness and prosperity equation. Confusing the dignity robbing nature of a hand out with the far reaching potentials of a hand up, these folks are doing more to uphold their vanity needs than the people they pretend to help. Any person worth his salt believe in loving his fellow man - liberal regressives use the promise of something for nothing as a path to political power and personal gain. This is another liberal lie that is anything but loving.
The Candid Conservative remains a dedicated liberal with a conservative sense of reason. For the inspiration behind that bit of confusion, we need look no further than the Latin word 'conservare' - "to preserve". When combining real conservatism with real liberalism the mission is to unite the wisdom of the past with the potentials of a liberated future. One can find a model for this success equation in the U.S. Constitution - a document that mocks the lies of make believe conservatives and liberals alike...
